This kind of people makes life better and poker profitable

May 19th, 2006

That was my another poker session. Nothing special… I feel myself more and more comfortable at these limits ($0.1 - $0.2). I could even read some hands of my opponents making the moves that are really profitable for me (both winning hands and avoiding loosing ‘em). Now I could say that I’ve earned somewhat $15. And by the way the pokerroom had granted me my bonus. I was so happy getting that $15 as I’ve never been before. I don’t remember properly how much I had won for the moment THAT guy sit at our table. A dollar maybe less… It really doesn’t matter.

But the guy had exploded the table. Take a look on this hand that had become usual from that moment.

Preflop There were nobody at SB. I was #6. The guy was #5.

As for me I can’t understand the guys that could cap the flop having nothing except the pair on the deck… Maybe this conduct could be profitable in heads-ups (or in the case when everybody folds except one very suspicious gambler). But having two callers it’s obviously brings losses.

Anyway I’d prefer all my opponents doing so. They are unpredictable for sure but rare entering the game brings me enough profit. Look at the next hand that brought the money to me.

Preflop. I was #4. SB Posted Small Blind $0.05

Preflop trainer

May 12th, 2006

The most valuable information I’ve got while reading Holdem Poker for Advanced players were the charts of preflop hands. That was a real discovery for me… I’ve found that I was playing too many hands. If I only could calculate the losses that I had generated with the hands like Ace-Four offsuited!

Understanding the way I had to play preflop was very crucial for my benefits. That was a real discovery for me. I should have cried “eureka!” like Archimedes when I found the tables of hands power by Sklansky.

But this discovery brought me a new headache. There are 169 starting hands in holdem poker. And there are more than 50 hands that could be played by an adequate player in different cases. The problem was to learn those hands and the cases of their application. I hadn’t got enough experience to distinguish my position and evaluate the power of my hand related to the power of my opponents hands in every single situation in just a couple of seconds. If I wasn’t sure in the hand I had I had to open the tables (though I’ve scanned them and put in front of my monitor :) ), find the hand there, evaluate my position and make a decision. That was too hard.

So I had to learn the hands again and again… And I’m not a teenager ready to learn everything… So that was very hard for me.

Thanks God I’ve found very useful software that helped me so much. It’s so called preflop trainer made in Excel with the help of macros. I had no more need to spend the real money in order to learn the right hands. The trainer have made models of preflop for me and I had to choose my variant of conduct. Than the trainer have given me a mark and explained the right variant if I was wrong.

In just a week I had no more problems with my preflop playing in different situations at different kinds of tables. I’m so thankful to the guy that coded that soft that I feel I should donate him some money…

Micro limits and David Sklansky

May 10th, 2006

As I’ve said some time ago I started to improve by poker skills by reading Holdem Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth.

That was something unbelievable. I’ve found a lot of concepts that I had been constantly violating. I can’t understand why I’m still not a bankrupt. Maybe others are even more morons than I used to be…

Now I think I’m ready to conquer the peaks of holdem poker.

For the moment I know that I should know the principles of the play at tight and loose tables, the concepts of bluff, semibluff and slowplaying before the beginning. I still can’t understand some things in the book but I decided to turn back later.

I have liked the advice of Sklansky and Malmuth so much that I decided to implement it to my practice.

I’ve written a slogan stating that a call on a flop is a money lost and started to observe my preflop fold rate. I believed that if I play rather tight and very aggressive I could earn much more in my microlimit table with very loose and rather passive way of play. I also started to use semibluff and bluff concepts in my games.

As a result I’ve lost $5 (that is 25 Big Bets) in just half an hour…

What’s going on??? I was playing better!

And those loosers were seeking their luck on river calling my raises and getting two pairs… I can’t believe it!

I like the river!

Poker: a game or a virus?

May 8th, 2006

I’ve found a strange feature of poker. It conquers everybody who deals with it. I don’t know any exceptions for the moment.

If you hear about poker and decide not deal with it than nothing threats you. But if any person decides to taste it he stays with poker. He thinks of poker. He discusses poker. He tries to know something about poker. He remembers all his brilliant winnings and the most incredible bad beats.

So I really start thinking that poker is a virus not a game. It’s creeping all over the world leaving most of its victims without money but with an incredible desire to take a seat at poker table.

By the way does anyone knows a cure for poker?..

Now I’m observing my wife playing poker on my account… She’s so funny type of pokerplayer. She’s afraid to raise if she doesn’t have absolutely nuts. She could even fold AQ if someone raises on preflop. And she doesn’t like Queens. She says ladies will always betray you if the case tightens up…

And now she is shrieking as she wins with AA.

By the way she’s earning money at the lowest limits as she plays rather tight.

My 10 year old son also pays attention to our affairs. Hum… I don’t want him to play until he learns to have control over himself. I don’t want him to loose my money. So we don’t explain him the rules of holdem poker.

But seems that he is also caught by that virus.

Just an example of that day’s hand
